There Were no Dramatic Changes on the Austrian Nuts and Kernels Market in 2008
Jun 15th, 2010In 2008 despite the worsening economical situation, there were no dramatic changes on the Austrian consumer market, Nuts and Kernels Market included. As for most products, purchasing power remained at the level of the preceding year.
There has been a moderate increase of consumer goods and services prices with a clear trend of its enhancing.
Starting with 2008 global production of walnuts, pistachio nuts, hazelnuts, almond has steeped, production of cashew nuts remained at the same level, however production of pignolia nuts has dropped significantly. But all in all global financial crisis has impacted dried fruit and nuts sector in the least negative way, compared to other fruit and vegetable sectors of the market.
According to FAO (United Nations Food And Agriculture Organization), global nuts turnover reached 11.3 mln tons in 2008 (4.5% more than in 2007). The USA, China, Turkey and Vietnam were considered to be the major producers.
In view of its climate conditions, Austrian producers cover only a small part of nuts demand, so Austria is a large-scale importer.
In 2008 Austria imported 18.4 thousand tons of nuts and 91.37 thousand tons of kernels. Its major partners in this respect are EU countries (Hungary, Slovakia, Italy, Germany), the USA, Middle East countries.
In Austria walnuts are successfully cultivated. However in this country walnut trees yield only once a season and do not cover the demand on the Austrian market. In 2008 production of unhulled walnuts mounted 19,130 tons, 1,039.7 tons of which was exported. Import of walnuts in the same year made up 2,795.8 tons.
Sunflowers are also cultivated in the country. In 2008 the yielding capacity reached 29 tons per 1 ha. The produced volume of sunflower kernels reached 79,658 tons, larger part of it was exported. At the same time kernel trade balance remains negative in Austria.
