Styron Takes on Dow’s Stake in Sumitomo JV
Nov 9th, 2010Styron, the former PS and PC operation of Dow Chemical, has taken over Dow’s 50% share in the Sumitomo Dow polycarbonate joint venture in Asia.
As a result of the deal, which closed on September 24, the business will eventually be renamed. The company said the new identity will be announced around the end of the year.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. However, Styron said the unit will continue to be headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, and will continue to supply polycarbonate products under the Calibre and SD Polyca names.
“Styron has a strong commitment to its polycarbonate and compounds and blends businesses, and plans to pursue growth opportunities for these products, particularly in the Asia Pacific geography,” said Chris Pappas, president and CEO of Styron.
Dow Chemical sold the Styron business unit – which includes PS, ABS, SAN polymers, styrene-butadiene latex and synthetic elastomers, EPS resins and PC polymers and posted sales of $3.7bn (€3.0bn) in 2009 - to private equity group Bain Capital earlier this year.
